While these various storage mediums exist, the Research Technology Office recommends that all research projects choose storage solutions that provide the appropriate level of protection for the research data collected or created. This means that all data should be stored in a secure, resilient manner. Consequently, machine hard drives and USB drives should only be considered as temporary storage solutions, and only if the data is non-sensitive in nature. However, some research data that we collect regardless of data classification can be considered to be \u201cregulated research data\u201d.\u00a0 This is institutional information that ASU classifies as high-risk university data that is subject to legal or regulatory requirements and requires additional provisions to ensure it is adequately stored and protected.\u00a0 This usually includes additional controls and policies to restrict unauthorized or unapproved access to (or sharing of) the data.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nRegulated research data may include (but is not limited to):\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>All human health data with links to the individual<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Identifiable human subject data (PII)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Identifiable financial data (PFI)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Export Administration Regulations (EAR)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Dark web<\/li>\r\n \t<li>National Security Defense data<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Some social media data<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Cybersecurity<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Data provided by a 3rd party via a data use agreement that has restrictions on use, possession, or access<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIf in doubt as to whether or not your research activities create or involve regulated research data, please contact the Research Data Management Office for additional guidance.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> <!-- uds-card-arrangement-card-container -->\n<\/div> <!-- close uds-card-arrangement -->\n\t\n\n<h2  class=\"mt-6\"> <span class=\"highlight-gold\">Research data storage selector<\/span><\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-row row justify-content-between\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-7\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<p>The Research Storage Selector will help identify the most appropriate storage option for various types of research data. Please contact&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/asu.service-now.com\/sp?id=sc_cat_item&amp;sys_id=6226e0541bf61c109a9cca2b234bcb33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the UTO<\/a>&nbsp;for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mt-6\"><strong>What options do I have if I only have general storage requirements, such as physical sciences, spatial\/remotely sensed, life sciences (NOT human subjects research data and NOT personal identifiable information (PII) data)?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several options exist for these types of data. You can consider storing your data on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"uds-list wp-block-list\"><li>Dropbox<\/li><li>Google Drive<\/li><li>One Drive (1 TB per person)<\/li><li>For very large volumes of data Research Computing can provide project storage at $50 per terabyte per year.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mt-6\"><strong>What options do I have if my research collects human subjects research data that contains personally identifiable information (PII)) data?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are multiple approved storage solutions for human subjects research data that contain PII. The Arizona Secure Research Environment (ASRE), AWS Fsx, and the REDCap HIPAA compliant solution are all suitable for human study research data.
